Which thickness should I choose when selecting a Yoga Mat?

Yoga Mats are offered in a variety of thicknesses. Here is a breakdown in order of thickness:

  1. 1/16"
  2. 3 mm
  3. 1/8" (common thickness of a standard "sticky" mat)
  4. 4 mm
  5. 3/16"
  6. 5 mm
  7. 6 mm
  8. 1/4" (common thickness of a standard Pilates Mat)
  9. 5/16"
  10. 3/8"
  11. 10 mm

However, the materials that a mat is constructed of can change the "cushion-factor". For example, some of the 3/16" rubber mats will offer the same cushioning as a 1/4" PVC mat.

There is no specific rule on what thickness you should use. But there are a couple of things to consider:

  • What surface will you be practicing on most often? If you are at home on carpet you might not need a thicker mat.
  • While doing balance poses, it is nice to have a firm connection with the ground. Too much cushion will make these poses more difficult.
  • If you'll be on hard surfaces, such as concrete, some extra cushioning might help to protect your ankles and knees in certain poses, as well as insulate you from the cold flooring.
  • Will you be traveling with your mat? Thicker mats have more bulk and weight.

Here are some general thoughts on the choices available: The 1/8" thick mats are lightweight so they are great for portability and also for those individuals who wish to be closer to the ground. The 1/4" adds cushioning to protect ankles, knees, and other sensitive bones for a more comfortable practice. The 5/16" provides extra cushioning to protect the spine during floor workouts. These mats are good for pilates and core workout routines, in addition to yoga. Hopefully, this information will help you choose the right yoga mat for your practice.
